Fire Lt. suspended for handing out Halloween candy on-duty

Firefighters took a truck, an ambulance and another fire vehicle when they went out to pass out candy

BROOK PARK, Ohio — Firefighters who handed out Halloween candy using a fire truck are under investigation this week.

Brook Park Mayor Tom Coyne said the firefighters are being investigated because “they took two-thirds of our firefighting equipment and went out trick-or-treating.”

A fire lieutenant who was supervising during the shift was suspended with pay while the investigation is conducted, reported FOX8

Firefighters took a truck, an ambulance and another fire vehicle when they went out to pass out candy; they said they were still prepared to respond to calls.

The fire union sided with the firefighters, stating they will oppose any disciplinary actions.

“They’re able to multi-task and perform community service at the same time that they’re on-duty standing by for an emergency,” Scott Maynor, a fire union member, said.
