Mobile Fire-Rescue fireboat 'indispensable' in barge explosion response

MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department's fireboat has seen its fair share of action in the last few weeks, responding when the Carnival Triumph broke free from its moorings on April 3 and when barge fires caused a series of explosions on April 24.

The 40-foot "Phoenix" was responsible for determining when temperatures inside the fuel barges had died down enough for a HazMat team to check it and for officials to start investigating the cause of the April 24 blazes.

"That's something we couldn't have done from land -- we had to have a boat," said Steve Huffman, public information officer for MFRD. "You may not use it every day, but when you use it, it's indispensable."
