Architect of home involved in LODD fire on trial

The presiding judge believes Gerhard Albert Becker negligently built the home

LOS ANGELES — The architect who owned and designed a Hollywood Hills home that caught fire and partially collapsed killing a firefighter, has been ordered to stand trial.

Gerhard Albert Becker is accused of evading building regulations during the construction of his home, according to Hollywood Patch.

Firefighter Glenn Allen, 61, was struck by part of the burning home's ceiling while fighting the February 2011 fire. He died two days later from his injury. One other firefighter was injured at the scene when he pinned under debris.

Prosecutors say the fire was traced to a fireplace that was installed inside the home instead of its intended outdoor use, and that Becker ignored warning against installing it indoors.

Becker was charged with the felony nearly a year later. His lawyers say that he thought it was safe to install. He is due in court Dec. 12.
