Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Superintendent and the general direction of the Hutchinson Fire Department's Division Chief of Operations, the Emergency Vehicle Technician performs skilled repair and maintenance work on a wide variety of fire apparatus and equipment owned and operated by the Hutchinson Fire Department. This position provides occasional oversight, training and direction to lower level mechanics working on fire or other similar apparatus. The Emergency Vehicle Technician assists with the development and implementation of short and long-range maintenance programs for the Fire Department's apparatus and equipment. This position requires strong mechanical aptitude and technical skills, as well as strong communication and organizational skills.

$19.02 to $28.52 Hourly Rate Depending on Qualifications

Additional Information

  • Performs major and minor repairs on all Fire Department apparatus and equipment, such as engine overhauls, major pump repairs, and hydraulic equipment repairs to ensure they will perform under emergency conditions. Makes major improvements or modifications to new or existing fire apparatus in accordance with departmental needs and specifications;
  • Provides expert repairs and guidance on braking systems, to include ABS, heavy duty air brake systems including manual and automatic slack adjusters, dryers, compressors, valves, regulators, etc. Performs drivability test drives and diagnoses drive train and chassis problems;
  • Removes, repairs, replaces and overhauls driveline components, i.e. clutches, transmissions, torque converters, differentials, power dividers, transfer cases, hubs, spindles, etc. Performs mechanical, electrical, and fluid repairs which may require use of specialized equipment including test gauges, computer links, scan tools, power tools, pyrometers, digital voltmeters, scopes, etc.;
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses and repairs ignition, fuel, pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical systems. Tests and diagnoses computer feedback devices, i.e. 02 sensors, TPS, MAPS, knock, and other sensors. Performs diesel engine opacity tests as needed;
  • Maintains complete and accurate maintenance and repair records for all apparatus and equipment utilizing the City’s Computerized Fleet Analysis (CFA) program. Ensures close communication with members of the Fire Department to coordinate equipment repair and preventative maintenance work;
  • Attends training courses and maintains current proficiency related to emergency operations and fire apparatus maintenance; Trains and oversees other mechanics assisting in the repair and maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment; Ensures quality control and inspection of outside contractors that perform work on fire apparatus;

Job Requirements

  • Age: Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Education: High School or GED required; special training in automotive mechanic and diesel equipment preferred
  • Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of progressive mechanic experience with at least two (2) years' experience in diagnosing, maintaining and repairing diesel/heavy equipment

Must possess and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within 45 days of hire. Must also obtain ASE T-4 Heavy Duty Truck, Brakes; ASE T-5 Heavy Duty Truck, Suspension and Steering; and Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) F-1 Inspection certifications within one year of hire.
