Job Description

The Position

The Firefighter / EMT responds to fires , medical emergencies and other emergency and

non emergency situations and takes appropriate actions to protect life and property; perform

various staff support assignments in addition to normal emergency response. Fire Fighter /EMT

will be assigned to an engine company. A Captain provides general supervision, and

responsibilities may include indirect supervision of support staff.

Duties

  • Respond to calls for medical aid, including traffic collisions and rescue situations.

Provide pre-hospital care including patient assessment and treatment. Inspection and

restocking of equipment and supplies.

  • Respond to fire emergencies, deployment of hose lines to control and extinguish fires

utilizing various sizes hand lines and master streams with appropriate nozzles such as

foam educators and nozzles.

  • Deployment of ladders to access areas for search and rescue or ventilation.

  • Deployment and use of various power tools, hand tools and hydraulic tools to obtain

access to buildings, extricate victims from entrapment, and provide ventilation.

Participate in specialized operations, water rescue, underground and confined space

situations including the use of rope rescue equipment, and shoring.

  • Participate in the mitigation of hazardous materials incidents by assisting with

containment, control of leak, and decontamination,

  • Participate in clean up, salvage and overhaul operations, clean and inspect equipment to

ensure readiness of apparatus and equipment.

  • Assist with cleaning and maintenance of stations and facilities.

  • Work with the community in a variety of public education, relations and service

programs

  • Participate in staff assignments including fire prevention and inspection, documentation

of inspections, inventory and other records as assigned.

  • Provide coverage for additional shifts as required by the policies and procedures.

  • Respond as part of strike team or task force with commitment of up to two weeks.

  • Ability to successfully complete physical ability test.

  • Perform related duties as assigned

The District

The Rancho Adobe Fire District is a full service fire and rescue agency. The district operates out of three stations located in the City of Cotati, Penngrove and the Liberty Valley. The District currently staffs three engine companies, a part time BLS ambulance, and a 24-hour Battalion Chief. Call volume is continually increasing and varied. Training and opportunities provide exposure to the many facets and makes the District a place for an exciting career. Three shifts provide coverage utilizing the 48 / 96 schedule. You can expect to gain experience in the following areas:

The Rancho Adobe Fire Protection District is rated by the Insurance Services Office (ISO) as a Class Four District and recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of service to the community. In

2018, the residents strongly supported “Measure W” allowing for full staffing at all stations in addition to enhanced service by means of Paramedic staffing (still to be filled).

Qualification

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Demonstrate a strong foundational knowledge base in the areas of fire suppression and

prevention, operation of fire equipment, department operations and emergency medical

care.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and a high level of

customer service with the public.

  • English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation.

  • Maintain adequate physical fitness.

  • Perform professionally in a non-traditional work schedule including weekends and

holidays.

  • Apply the mechanics of firefighting and emergency medical care at an EMT level.

  • Make sound, independent decisions in emergency situations.

  • Principles and practices of emergency care to the enhanced EMT level (CVEMSA).

  • Safety practices and precautions pertaining to the work.

  • Basic computer skills with ability to complete reports.

  • Ability to apply time management to assigned projects and personal schedule.

Education and Experience (minimum requirements)

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • California State Firefighter I

  • Current California Emergency Medical Technician Current CPR card

  • Valid California Class C driver’s license or higher

Highly Qualified candidates (Desirable)

  • Firefighter II

  • California Class B CDL

  • Associates Degree or higher

  • Experience as EMT in a 911 system

  • Full time paid firefighting experience

  • Rescue training

  • HAZMAT training / certification

  • Driver operator Training / experience

Hiring Requirements

Candidates being considered for selection are subject to physical abilities test, oral interview, and

practical exercise or other qualification testing, background investigation, polygraph, preemployment

medical / psychological examination, and State of California Department of Justice

fingerprint search of records (Live Scan). Successful candidates must pass a drug screen as part

of the pre-employment medical examination to be considered for appointment. All statements

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to

palpate, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee frequently is

required to walk; occasionally required to stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl,

taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift weight in excess of over 150 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision; color vision,

peripheral vision; depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of

this job the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions from heat to freezing.

The employee is occasionally exposed to high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles;

toxic or caustic chemicals; explosives; and vibration. The noise level in the work is usually loud.

A firefighter is required to wear appropriate firefighting and chemical safety apparel and

equipment including turnout gear, helmet, hood, and self-contained breathing apparatus.

Compensation and Benefits

As an employee of the Rancho Adobe Fire Protection District

Salary Range: $55,441 - $67,459

And is supplemented by the following benefits package that includes, but is not limited to:

Retirement: CalPERS 2.7% @ 57 (“New” Members) or 2% @ 50 (“Classic” Members)

Healthcare: Fully-funded family medical (currently Kaiser H.S.A. $0/$2000 Plan with HSA funding to

$3,450/$6,850), Vision, and Dental.

Sick Leave: Accrued at 6 hours per pay period, no limit.

Vacation Leave: Accrued at between 6 and 12 hours per pay period based upon years of service with the District.

Vacation is capped at two and a half times the annual accrual.
