Job Description

This recruitment is open to all candidates that meet minimum qualifications.  The starting hourly rate is a non-negotiable rate of $25.02 ($72,858.24 annualized).

Anaheim Fire & Rescue provides emergency fire protection and medical services to residents and visitors of the City of Anaheim. We are recruiting individuals to join us in our mission to ensure the safety and welfare of the public we serve through the services we provide. This recruitment will yield an eligible list of Firefighter candidates for our 2021 Firefighter Academy. Candidates that are State of California licensed paramedics with at least one (1) year of experience may also be eligible for available Firefighter Paramedic positions which are eligible for an additional Paramedic Assignment Pay (15% of top step of Firefighter I - $5.03 per hour).

++ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:++

The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Respond as a team member on an assigned fire company to emergency and non-emergency calls.

Follow the instructions of the Captain or standard procedures in laying hose, setting ladders and performing rescue, ventilation, salvage and cleanup work.

Participate in all phases of fire department activities including firefighting, hose evolutions, laddering, and use of special equipment, safety, hazardous materials abatement, medical aid, and fire prevention.

Assist in planning of and participates in drills and other training activities to learn and improve fire fighting tactics.

Participate in routine non-emergency activities such as fire prevention inspections, code enforcement, public education, hydrant testing, drills and training, district and familiarization.

Perform routine in-station activities such as station housekeeping, equipment cleaning and routine maintenance, grounds maintenance, supply requisitioning, bike license issuance, public education and positive public relations.

Assist in preparing meals and maintaining living quarters. Live and work cooperatively with peers and supervisors; establish and maintain working relationships, exercise good judgment, tact and diplomacy in dealing with a multitude of issues.

Respond to major alarms off duty when called.

Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

++QUALIFICATIONS:++

Experience and Training: An equivalent combination of experience and training sufficient to perform the essential job functions and provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Knowledge of: modern firefighting methods and techniques; emergency medical methods and procedures; safety

practices and regulations; CPR techniques; fire science; principles of fire prevention and arson investigation; various firefighter rescue and emergency medical tools and equipment.

Ability to: Use various firefighting rescue and emergency medical tools and equipment; take appropriate courses of action in emergencies; effectively and safely fight fires using a variety of firefighting apparatus and equipment; work in dangerous conditions around fire, chemicals and smoke; safely follow directions; live and work cooperatively with co-workers; establish and maintain working relationships, exercise good judgment, tact and diplomacy in dealing with issues.

Note: Must be 18 years of age by date of appointment.

++THE FOLLOWING DEGREE/LICENSE/CERTIFICATION ARE REQUIRED:++

Graduation from high school or its equivalent.

Graduation from a California Office of the Fire Marshal State Fire Training accredited Firefighter I Academy. (https://osfm.fire.ca.gov/divisions/state-fire-training/accredited-academies/) If your program is not listed, it is your responsibility to obtain documentation from the California Office of the Fire Marshal stating your program's accreditation.

State of California certification as an Emergency Medical Technician I and Defibrillation.

An American Heart Association CPR certification.

Must provide proof of successfully completing the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) or the Biddle Physical Agility Test within the last twelve (12) months of October 15, 2020 or by November 30, 2020.

A valid Class "C" California Driver's License with Firefighter endorsement must be obtained by the end of the probationary period and maintained thereafter.

If paramedic: A valid State of California Paramedic Licensure.

Proof of all required documents/certifications/licenses listed above must be attached to the application. Those who do not attach required documents will not be considered for the position.

Individuals hired with a specialty certification/license, including but not limited to paramedic, urban search and rescue, and hazardous materials, must maintain a certification/license in that specialty for the duration of their employment; provided however, that this requirement may be waived by the Fire Chief, with the concurrence of the Human Resources Director, if, in their professional judgment, such a waiver is warranted by the particular circumstances.

The selection process may include, but is not limited to a written exam, oral interviews, and an interview with the Fire Chief.  Tentative dates and descriptions are provided below: 

The written exam is scheduled to take place the week of November 16, 2020. 

The oral interviews and Chief's interviews are scheduled to take place the week of November 30, 2020.

Further selection steps include a medical examination, which includes drug/alcohol screening, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, and background investigation. The interview with the background investigator and completion of the background investigation will include, but is not limited to, verification and evaluation of any present and/or past use of drugs, driving and employment history.
