Welcome to the 2021-2022 Entry-Level Firefighter Recruitment! We are so excited to begin this process which will help us find the best possible fire candidates!
Due to the uncertainty surrounding the ongoing worldwide coronavirus pandemic, the City of Boise reserves the right to make changes, as needed, to the examination date, time, location, process and procedures, including cancelling the examinations, at any time with or without notice.
IMPORTANT DATES TO NOTE
- July 1st, 2021 at 8:00 a.m. MST: The City of Boise will officially open this year’s Fire Fighter Recruitment.
- September 6th, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. MST: Deadline for written examination payment. To receive consideration, applications and a $30.00 testing fee must be received by this date. This is described in Step 1 and 2 below.
- September 30th, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. MST: Deadline for scheduling your written examination. Test times will be offered during October 7th & 8th, 2021. Exams will be held at the Expo Idaho. This is described in Step 3 below.
- October 25th, 2021: Deadline to obtain EMT Certification.
If you fail to meet these deadlines, you will not be considered as an applicant for the 2021 Entry-Level Firefighter Recruitment.
Step 1: Pay for the Written Exam

When making your payment through PayPal, please be sure to note the email used in the transaction. Applications cannot be submitted without providing the email used while submitting payment through PayPal. If you forget to write it down at the time of payment, your receipt will be emailed to the email address linked on your PayPal account. Please note that payments for this exam are NON-REFUNDABLE. If you pay for the exam and do not show, you will not receive a refund.
ADA Accommodations: In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, disabled applicants who need a reasonable accommodation to participate in the written exam shall submit a written request for an accommodation to Rudy Gloria at ++email@example.com++ by __September 6, 2021__. Requests for a reasonable accommodation must be clearly defined. Applicants must attach documentation from a medical provider or accredited counseling agency stating the disability, functional limitations and proposed accommodation. In accordance with the law, the city will review all requests and will provide reasonable accommodations.
Step 2: Apply to the Boise Fire Department

No late submissions will be accepted. Any additional certifications can be provided at oral interviews.
Step 3: Schedule Written Exam Date and Time
Once the City of Boise has reviewed your application and verified payment, you will receive an email notification to self-schedule for the written exam through your application account. Please be aware that this process can take up to a week. It will be important that you check your account regularly to receive notifications regarding your application. Entry-Level Written Exams will be held at the Expo Idaho (5610 N. Glenwood Street, Boise, ID 83714) on the following dates:
- Thursday October 7th, 2021
- Friday October 8th, 2021
Written exam scores will be emailed to candidates by 5:00 p.m. MST, Friday, October 15, 2021. Candidates who score above a determined cutoff score on the written exam will receive an invitation to schedule an oral board interview.
Oral boards are tentatively scheduled Monday, October 25, 2021 through Saturday, October 30, 2021. Candidates will be asked to log back into their Government Jobs application account to self-schedule for an interview date and time.
An eligibility list will be created of candidates who pass both the written exam and oral board interviews. This list will expire one year from the date it is established.
Important! If you are offered a position with the Boise Fire Department and choose to decline that offer, you will be removed from the eligibility list, and consequently will need to re-apply in 2022 to receive consideration.
Physical Fitness Test
Select candidates will receive a conditional offer of employment with the Boise Fire Department. A medical exam including a comprehensive medical history, treadmill, physical condition assessment and other related medical tests will be performed with a physician.
The Boise Fire Department’s offer of employment is contingent upon passing a Physical Fitness Test which will consist of a 1.5 mile run in less than 11 minutes 30 seconds.
Strength and fitness preparation is a crucial step in the successful completion of the physical demands of the Boise Fire Academy. Individuals should engage in advanced physical training targeting muscle groups used in lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying and other actions related to firefighter tasks. A workout program may include distance running, sprints, rowing, stair climbing with weight pack and weightlifting to develop both the upper and lower body.

- Experience: Entry Level
Minimum qualifications for a firefighter position:
- At least 18 years of age
- Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent
- Possess a valid driver’s license
- Possess a current National Registry or state-issued EMT Basic Certification by date of interview, with the ability to obtain reciprocity in Idaho within 120 days of employment and maintain certification
