Job Description

The City of Georgetown is recruiting to establish an eligibility list for the Civil Service position of Firefighter/Paramedic (eligibility list will remain active for up to 1 year). Duties will include responding to all fires, emergency medical, and rescues & recovery alarms; sustaining high level of preparedness for emergencies; maintaining vehicles & equipment for fire suppression/prevention and for rescue & recovery. Subject to callback for emergencies, special training and/or other administrative reasons.
    • ++The City of Georgetown Fire Department is providing interested candidates with the option to participate in one (1) of two (2) written exam test date options for an upcoming Firefighter/Paramedic Entry Exam. Candidates can choose to participate in a written exam on November 23, 2019 or December 7, 2019. Interested candidates may only participate in one (1) of the available written exams.++

We have immediate plans to hire Paramedic, Firefighter/Paramedic, and/or Firefighter EMT-B candidates currently enrolled in Paramedic School. Candidates that have recent 9-1-1 experience and a strong desire to serve the community with professionalism, compassion, and dedication are highly encouraged to apply.

Firefighter EMT-B candidates must be certified as a basic Firefighter through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection and certified as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic through the Texas Department of State Health Services at the time of written examination. Firefighter EMT-B candidates must also provide proof of enrollment in a Paramedic Program that will result in certification as a Paramedic within 9 months of the job offer.

Firefighting and Emergency Medical Services are only the beginning. ++Candidates are highly encouraged to participate in orientations and timed practices of the Candidate Physical Ability Test portion of the exam. Orientation and Practices will take place at the Fire Training Ground behind Georgetown Fire Station 5 located at 3600 D.B. Wood Rd., Georgetown TX 78626.++

++Successful completion of a timed practice will be counted as successful completion of the CPAT portion of the testing process and candidates will not have to retake the test on December 7, 2019. Failure of a timed practice will not count against participating candidates. Candidates who have passed a CPAT six months prior to the written test shall be exempt from having to take the CPAT as long as proof is provided from the original testing agency or department. ++

(Wear long pants compatible with physical activity for both the orientation and time practices, equipment will be provided but candidates may want to bring their own hand protection.) - Must Be Certified as a Paramedic, Firefighter/Paramedic, or Firefighter/EMT-B currently enrolled in a paramedic program, at the time of written exam and obtain Texas Department of State Health Services Paramedic Certification by date of offer and, in the case of Firefighter/EMT-B Candidates, be enrolled in a paramedic program with the ability to obtain Paramedic certification through the Texas Department of State Health Services within 9 months of hire. 

And all of the following:

Have the ability to receive Certification as a Basic Firefighter by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. (Eligible to participate in a TCFP and GFD approved Fire Academy and pass Certification requirements mandated by TCFP following date hire)

Achieve a minimum passing score of seventy (70) percent on the written examination

Successfully complete the physical ability test

Pass a background investigation

Pass oral interviews

Successfully complete a polygraph examination

Successfully complete a post-job offer drug screen, psychological examination, medical examination

Be at least eighteen (18) years of age and under forty-five (45) years of age at time of hire.

Be a graduate of an accredited high school or have an equivalency certificate

Have a valid Texas driver's license at the date of hire

Be legally eligible to work within the United States

Be able to read, write, and speak the English language

Be of good moral character

++The written examinations will occur on Saturday, November 23, 2019 @ 9:30 a.m. and Saturday, December 7, 2019 @ 9:30 a.m.++

++The Candidate Physical Ability Test will take place on Saturday, December 7, 2019. (A practice CPAT will be available on November 9, 2019, as well as following the written exam on Saturday November 23, 2019 as well and a final will be available after the written exam on Saturday December 7) CPAT times will be assigned following successful completion of the written exam.++

Completed Personal History Statements are due immediately following successful completion of the written examination. Packets must include all requested forms and any required notarization must be completed prior to submittal.

Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will receive an email with the Personal History Statements attached. Failure to return the completed packet along with required documents following the written exam will disqualify you as a candidate.

For applicants who wish to have military credit of five (5) points added to a passing test score of 70% or better, you must provide a copy of military discharge papers (DD214), member 4 copy, showing 1.) Honorable Discharge and 2.) A minimum of 180 total days of active military service.

++In order to receive credit on the day of the exam you must bring a copy of your DD214 to the written examination and submit it to a City representative at check-in.++

++Salary Information++ Candidates hired that possess a paramedic certification will have a starting salary of $56,203. This salary is inclusive of Paramedic Credentialing pay in the amount of $5,400. Candidates hired that do not possess a paramedic certification will have a starting salary of $50,803. Upon completion of their paramedic program, and receipt of Paramedic certification or license, those candidates will also be eligible for the Paramedic Certification and Assignment Pay in the amount of $5,400/year. Candidate eligibility for assignment pay is determined by the Fire Chief. Longevity and Overtime are also available.
