Firefighter/EMT

Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue provides fire suppression, ALS transport - emergency medical services (EMS), hazardous materials and technical rescue services to the community. The department responds to approximately 7500 incidents a year, with approximately 5000 being EMS-related responses. To meet this service requirement, all personnel are trained to a minimum level of Basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and approximately 50 personnel are trained to the paramedic (EMT-P) level certification.

The department operates a 24 on and 48 hours off three-shift system with a minimum staffing level of twenty-nine (29) personnel on duty each day. In addition, a 3-person day crew operates on a 10 hours/day, 4 days/week schedule to support normal staffing during the daytime hours and to cover companies that relocate to our training center. We operate out of 7 fire stations, each with an engine or quint and an Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance. A Truck Company and one Battalion Chief fill out the apparatus assignments at the fire stations.

Saturday, March 27: Entry-level Firefighter Exam - Written Format - Location: Town Hall, Hilton Head Island

March 28 – April 3: Entry-level Firefighter Exam - Online Format

By Wednesday, April 14: Notification to Candidate of Exam Results

Saturday & Sunday April 24 - 25: Firefighter Candidate Physical Abilities Assessment (FPCAA) - Location: Fire Rescue Training Center, Hilton Head Island

Saturday & Sunday April 24 - 25: Candidate Interview will be conducted on the same day as the FCPAA

Monday, April 26: New Firefighter Candidate Pool

• Age: Must be 18 years of age at time of hire
• Education: High School Diploma or GED
• Experience: None

Additional Minimum Qualifications:

• Must be in good physical health as determined by a medical examination
• Valid Driver's License
