Job Description
The Houston Fire Department is the 3rd largest municipal department in the United States and is actively seeking candidates for the position of Firefighter Trainee. Firefighter Trainee's engage in an array of disciplined physical and academic activities to prepare to certify as Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technicians. Trainee's will participate in classroom lectures, seminars, drills, demonstrations and practical training sessions. Additionally, trainee's will be instructed on use of hydraulics, pump operation and maintenance, and in areas of suppression, rescue and emergency medical services.
Per Chapter 143.023 of the Texas Local Government Code (TLGC) A person may not take an entrance examination for a beginning position in the fire department unless the person is at least 18 years of age but not 36 years of age or older. A person may not be certified as eligible for a beginning position in the fire department if the person is 36 years of age or older. Below are the minimum requirements:
- Must have twenty-four (24) transferable college credit hours (only two (2) credit hours of Physical Education will be accepted) OR
- Two (2) years of full-time active military service with an honorable discharge as stipulated on a DD214 Member 4
Additional Information
Applicants with an active Fire certification AND an active EMT certification prior to job offer date are eligible for Incentive Pay if the Houston Fire Department initiates a Fast-Track class; based on operational need.
*$2,500 Fire and EMT certifications or $3,000 Fire and EMT Paramedic certifications. *
Job Requirements

- Education: 24 Accredited College Hours (or)
- Experience: 2 Years of active military experience with an honorable discharge
Upon meeting the minimum requirements applicants are invited to participate in the Civil Service Exam (CSE) and Physical Abilities Test (PAT). Applicants must pass the written CSE with a minimum score of 70% and all components of the PAT (as shown on the www.hfdcareers.org) website.
