Job Description

Entry Level full time firefighter.

An employee in this position engages directly in fire fighting, emergency medical service, rescue, and fire prevention activities, assists in the operational maintenance and minor repair of fire stations and equipment; does related work as directed. Duties are performed under the guidance and overall supervision of the shift Captain and the Fire Chief.

Shift work is on a 24 hour on duty and 48 off duty rotation.

The Kewanee Fire Department performs fire protection duties for 6 square miles and Emergency Medical Transport Services for 200 square miles responding to over 2400 calls annually.

Additional Information

Starting salary is (0-12 months) $43,166 plus incentive pay, (12 months +) $54,381 plus incentive pay.

Fire staff are represented by IAFF local 513.

Deadline for applications will be October 7th at 5pm with a physical fitness challenge and written testing both done on Saturday October 16th. Interviews for those passing both testing sessions will be the evening of October 19th.

Valid Illinois CPAT card with ladder endorsement may exempt out of fitness challenge portion of testing.

Job Requirements

  • Age: 21-35
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience: not required
  • Candidates must be between 21 and 35 years of age at time of application or otherwise exempt by law.
  • All candidates must be a United States Citizen.
  • Must possess a valid Illinois driver's license (must obtain by hire date if currently licensed in another state).
  • No felony convictions or certain misdemeanors.
  • The City of Kewanee requires all personnel to become a licensed paramedic as a condition of employment.
  • Residency is within 15 miles of city limits within 45 days of completing a one year probationary period.

How to Apply

Firefighter/EMT Initial Hire Testing

The Kewanee Board of Fire and Police Commissioners will be conducting examinations to establish an eligibility roster for the initial hire for the Kewanee Fire Department. There is no fee for this examination process. All candidates must be between the age of 21 and 35 at the time of application or otherwise exempt by law.
