Job Description

"The mission of the Bloomington Fire Department is protecting life and property; minimizing the impacts of fire, medical emergencies, and other natural or man-made disasters without subjecting our personnel to unreasonable risk. Our mission is accomplished through public education, fire prevention, code enforcement, fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials mitigation and fire investigation. We are dedicated to completing our mission in a competent and professional manner."

All candidates must take the FireTEAM exam through National Testing Network and submit a department application and required documents, located here https://mss.cityblm.org/MSS/employmentopportunities/default.aspx, by the deadline of September 1st, 2020. 

You will be tested on 4 areas (Human Relations, Mechanical, Math, and Reading) and must pass each area. An average score of all 4 areas will be determined. Average score must be 70% or higher to move forward. Scores will be available to view in your NTN account within 2-3 days.

Salary Information:  $59,523.22 annually to start

  • Second Year           $73,657.95
  • Third Year (base)   $81,254.35

Valid ILLINOIS State Driver's License : Yes

Ability to Read/Speak English : Yes

Vision : Far visual acuity shall be at least 20/30 binocular corrected with contact lenses or glasses. Far visual acuity uncorrected shall be at least 20/100 binocular for wearers of hard contacts or glasses. Successful long-term soft contact lenses shall not be subject to uncorrected criterion. Peripheral Vision- Visual field performance without correction shall be 140 degrees in the horizontal meridian in each eye. Must be able to distinguish red from green for color blindness.

College : 5 points for a Fire Science or Emergency Medical Services Associates degree or a Bachelor’s degree in any subject.

Prior Experience : 5 points for Military

Additional Requirements : Must possess an Illinois Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P) license at the time of hire. If the candidate has a National Registry paramedic license, they may participate and apply for the IDPH license later.

Within eighteen months of initial appointment employees must reside within a 25-mile radius from the intersection of Locust and North Main Streets in Bloomington. A copy of this map can be viewed and downloaded at: www.cityblm.org

Proof of successful completion of the CPAT test and documentation of ability to climb ladders at time of hire. Most CPAT locations offer the ladder climb test.
