The Apparatus Operator 1 - Lateral is a trainee-level classification and incumbents are required to successfully complete the entire four (4) week Lateral Academy including physical fitness training sessions / evaluations, and obtain National Professional Qualifications (NPQ) certification of Apparatus Operator Pumper.
Upon successful completion of the Academy, incumbents are promoted to Apparatus Operator 1 an advanced-level fire prevention, suppression, and emergency medical response classification. Under the direction of a Fire Lieutenant, the Apparatus Operator 1 manages assigned fire apparatus, equipment, and station. As an advanced-level classification, the Apparatus Operator 1 supervises assigned subordinate fire department personnel in performing shift duties.

Salary will be commensurate with years of experience, licenses, and certifications. Starting salary of candidates meeting the minimum requirements is $37,607. After successful completion of CES' four-week Lateral Academy and all Apparatus Operator 1 qualifications, the salary will increase to $41,155. Additional years of paid firefighter experience will receive additional compensation at 0.5% per year up to $44,756.

Motor Vehicle Reports:
DUI / DWI charge with deposition of nolo contender, conviction or plea within the past 3-5 years.
Driver license suspensions within the past 3 years (except for Insurance Cancellation)
Multiple Speeding Tickets within the past 2 years
Multiple accidents within the past 2 years
Reckless Driving within the past 2 years
Vehicular homicide or hit and run charge/arrest
Fleeing or attempting to elude the police charge/arrest
Applicants must undergo an extensive national background investigation. Applicants are finger-printed and in accordance with the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council (GFSTC), applicants for uniformed firefighting positions must not have:
Pending Criminal cases
Convictions, nolo contendere or pleas involving sexual offense or Domestic Violence Act offenses
Felony convictions and nolo contendere or pleas involving felony arrests (within last 10 years)
Multiple misdemeanors within the past 3 years
Serious misdemeanor convictions, nolo contendere, or pleas within the past 3 years
Criminal Convictions Records within the State of Georgia or nationwide during the past 10 years will be reviewed.
For all non-English speaking candidates, we can assist you per written request. During this time, we will provide a written English comprehension examination that test your ability to read and understand English. Upon successful completion of this exam, we will provide you the written examination and/or resources per written request.

- Education: Minimum: High School --- Preferred: Associates Degree in Fire Related Subject
- Experience: Minimum of two (2) year as a full time paid front line structural firefighter
*Minimum two (2) years of consecutive full-time service in a career fire department as a front line structural firefighter. Experience must exhibit a consistent pattern of participation, personal and professional growth, and increasing organizational responsibility.
*Class F License (State of Georgia) or other equivalent state license
*Georgia Certified Firefighter (or must obtain within six (6) months of hire date)
*NPQ or IFSAC Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations for First Responders
*NPQ or IFSAC Firefighter 1 and 2
*National Registry Emergency Medical Technician and/or Georgia Emergency Medical Technician
*National Incident Management System (NIMS) 100, 200, 700, 800
*NPQ or IFSAC Apparatus Driver/Operator Pumper
*NPQ or IFSAC Fire Instructor 1
*Associate's Degree in a qualifying field of study related to emergency services)
