Job Description
The Town of Signal Mountain is seeking professional candidates for the position of Training Officer / Fire Inspector. This position, under direction of the Fire Chief, is responsible for coordinating the training and professional development program for the Signal Mountain Fire Department. This position directs, plans, organizes, evaluates, and coordinates the training of the department, and is responsible for the interpretation and enforcement of the adopted Fire Codes and Town Fire Ordinances to ensure compliance. Responds to emergencies as needed to perform fire suppression, emergency medical treatment and other hazard mitigation.
-Ensures all fire department personnel meet their training requirements to maintain all required certifications needed to function in the department and to meet the mandatory requirement of ISO and the Tennessee Commission on Firefighting.
-Publishes and maintains the Training Schedule
-Conducts regularly scheduled company and multi-company drills/training exercises.
-Develops and updates/revises training objectives, lesson plans, performance standards, training bulletins, and PowerPoint presentations; utilizes training videos, flip charts, and other visual aids.
-Research new information for inclusion in written instructional material and identifies techniques for successful course development.
-Completes all required forms, reports, and documentation and forwards them to the Fire Chief as required.
-Maintains records of training programs, activities and employees’ participation and attendance.
-Protects life and property, responds to medical emergencies as required, participates in search and/or rescue operations as required, responds to fire alarms as required, conducts routine inspections and maintenance of apparatus.
-Assists in the review of architectural plans, construction plans, and specifications for conformance with fire codes.
-Performs fire code compliance work by enforcing codes pertaining to fire prevention and life safety issues.
-Investigates compliance issues and initiate fire inspections in commercial, industrial, and government owned properties.
-Interfaces with other Town departments regarding technical aspects of fire safety, building construction, and design and requirements of fire suppression and alarm systems.
-Prepares and completes various forms, reports, correspondence logs, investigation reports, violation reports, certificates of occupancy and other documents. Maintain records.
-All other duties as listed in the Department manual, and other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements
- Age: Minimum 21 years of age
- Education: High School Diploma / GED
- Experience: At least 10 years in the fire service, 3 of those years in a supervisory position or relative experience in the fire training field
The candidate must have the following requirements:
· Degree, diploma, or certification with time requirements of two years or the equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.
· At least 10 years in the fire service, 3 of those years in a supervisory position or relative experience in the fire training field
· Valid Tennessee Driver’s License (Class D) or equivalent
· State of Tennessee or equivalent (Pro Board or IFSAC) certifications: Firefighter II, Driver Pumper Operator, Aerial Apparatus Operator or a Fire Apparatus Operator, Fire Instructor I, Emergency Medical Technician (advanced preferred), Vehicle Extrication Technician (Instructor II is required within 3 years of employment)
· ICS 100, 200, 300,400,700, 800 required.
· Obtain and maintain International Codes Council Fire Inspector within 1 year of employment
