A treasure nestled in the magnificent setting of the Texas Hill Country, Boerne (pronounced “Bernie”) is only minutes north of San Antonio, via Interstate 10 and is home to over 22,000 and covers just over 12.2 square miles in Kendall County. Boerne, which is the county seat, is a charming, family-friendly community with a rich cultural history and thriving local economy. The City of Boerne has been a home-rule City with a council-manager form of government since 1995. The City Council is composed of five Council members, elected from single-member districts, and the Mayor, who is elected at large. A professional City Manager is hired by the Council to manage day-to-day operations.
The Boerne Fire Department (BFD) is a 40-member team providing fire protection services to approximately 200 square miles, which includes the City of Boerne and a portion of unincorporated areas of Kendall County. The Department is committed to providing the highest level of public safety service to the Boerne community and throughout Kendall County through the rapid mobilization of fire protection and emergency services in the event of a fire, disaster, or life-saving event.
An Associate Degree in fire science, fire protection, or a related field plus at least 10-15 years of experience as a firefighter, with at least 5-7 years of experience as a Captain or above, is required. A bachelor’s degree is a plus. Two years of administrative experience is preferred. Candidates who have moved progressively up through all the ranks of a fire department are preferred. Experience in wildland firefighting and in emergency management is required. Experience in fire prevention and plans review is a plus. A National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Certification (EFO), TEEX’s Fire Service Chief Officer (FSCEO) and/or the Texas Fire Chief Academy Certified Fire Executive (CFE) designation is preferred. The City reserves the right to allow substitutions in the event that an applicant exceeds requirements in one area but is deficient in another. It is preferred that candidates reside within a 30-minute response radius of Boerne.
The following certifications are required for candidates.
• TCFP Basic Firefighting Certification.
• TCFP Master Firefighter Certification
• TCFP Advanced Instructor Certification
• At least an EMT-B certification; paramedic certification is a plus.
• NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 certifications.
• TCFP Head of Department Certification (or must be able to obtain within 1 year of hire).
• Advanced TCFP certifications are a plus.
• A Texas Driver’s License (or must be able to obtain within 1 year of hire).
If hired, you will be subject to hazards associated with fire scene examinations including working inside and outside environments in all types of weather conditions, and exposure to smoke and high heat and other hazardous conditions.
