Job Description


This position trains to perform responsible protective service work providing fire suppression, emergency medical care and response to hazardous materials incidents; does related work as required. Much of this work is performed under simulated emergency conditions but may frequently involve considerable personal hazard. Work is performed as a student under the regular supervision of a qualified instructor. Some tasks may be performed under the supervision of other Fire Rescue employees while assigned to the operations division. Position is considered essential personnel.


Responding to emergency fire, medical related situations and hazardous materials incidents; providing entry, suppression and rescue services; maintaining equipment and facilities; continuing training and instruction.

  • Responds to calls to provide emergency medical assistance to provide basic life support or advanced life support.

  • Responds to fire alarms; operates fire pumps; fights fires; performs rescues; lifts, carries, drags, lays, and connects hose lines and appliances; assists in loading and unloading ladders; performs salvage and overhaul operations; directs traffic and establishes safety zones.

  • Responds to incidents involving hazardous materials; initiates requests for appropriate assistance; may provide emergency decontamination and/or treatment to contaminated victims.

  • Performs physical fitness training; participates in a continuous training program to improve competence in firefighting, medical clinical work and in rescue vehicle service and operation.

  • Inspects and tests fire apparatus and ambulances and their emergency equipment; maintains proper inventory of equipment and supplies for County EMS and fire units; cleans and sanitizes equipment; ensures that equipment is in proper and good working order; assists in cleaning and maintaining fire station and grounds.

  • Completes and maintains accurate records, forms, and reports for various administrative, operational, and training activities; assists volunteers with administrative duties.

  • Assists in pre-planning and on-site inspections of businesses and residences; performs data entry and assists in pre-incident response planning.

  • Educates the public in CPR and fire prevention.

  • Performs related tasks as required.


Ability to learn technical firefighting principles and techniques and principles of hydraulics as applied to fire suppression and become certified as a NFPA Firefighter 1 and 2; ability to learn emergency medicine practices and protocols and become certified as an Emergency Medical Technician in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Possess some knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the County; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.


Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.


This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a self contained breathing apparatus. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.


Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must successfully complete a Fauquier County Fire Rescue Recruit School to be considered for permanent appointment as a Fire Rescue Technician I. Must meet and maintain minimum qualifications and certifications for position as established by the department.

Starting salary is $47,324.16 (salary increase after completion of Academy to $49,800.00). Employees begin training in the Fire & Rescue Academy as a Fire Rescue Technician Trainee.

Lateral applicants with previous knowledge skills and abilities will be considered. Lateral candidates must have at least 2 years experience with a career department and have been through a recruit school or 5 years in a career department with the necessary certifications. Starting salary for lateral candidates is $52,291.20-$67,991.04 – salary commensurate with experience.
