Tips

The tasked with securing the hydrant a common place for staging the tools is the ground around the hydrant. This area is a bad choice. The ground area around hydrants can be a black hole with tall grass, wetlands, mud, snow, ditches and darkness at night. This makes losing the tools very easy.

The best place for the tools will be either on top of the hydrant or right at the base of it. When removing the caps, also place them at the base of the hydrant. The base of the hydrant is a good landmark for your tools and appliances, ensuring that they will not get lost.
