Securing the hydrant kit

By Mark van der Feyst

Being assigned to secure a hydrant when arriving at a fire can be a strenuous job. The truck pulls up at the hydrant, you are told to hit the hydrant and off you go. You grab all the required tools that you will need, a flashlight and a section of high volume hose, and you place it down by the hydrant.

One way to ensure that the supply hose is secured to the hydrant initially is to have a complete loop of rope or webbing attached to it along with the hydrant kit. All the firefighter has to do is grab the hose and the rope section and advance it to the hydrant. Once at the hydrant, the loop is thrown over the hydrant. The hose and the kit have been secured to the hydrant hands free.
