Rookie DC firefighter critically injured after being hit by fire truck

Officials said Dane Smothers Jr. was preparing equipment when a ladder truck hit him

WASHINGTON — A rookie firefighter was critically injured after being struck by a ladder truck at the scene of a house fire.

NBC Washington reported that Dane Smothers Jr. was preparing equipment when a ladder truck arriving at the scene hit him.

Smothers suffered multiple injuries and was transported to the hospital for surgery. He is in critical condition.

"This incident reminds us all of the bravery and dedication of our first responders. We owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude. Our thoughts and prayers are with Firefighter Smothers, his family, and his fellow Fire & EMS colleagues," Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a statement.
