BARSTOW, Calif. — A passing driver struck and critically injured a Barstow firefighter-engineer working a collision scene early Sunday morning.
The incident happened as three firefighters with the Barstow Fire Protection District were treating patients and preparing to clear the scene of a traffic collision on Interstate 15, the Daily Press reported.
Firefighter-Engineer David Spink was hit by “a fast-moving vehicle” said Fire Captain Travis Espinoza. Spink's fellow crewmembers "did initiate life-saving measures immediately" and requested additional resources.
Spink, who has been with the department for almost 33 years, was airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery, Espinoza told the Daily Press.
