SOUTH WALTON, Fla. — A firefighter is hospitalized in serious condition after being struck in a traffic crash while he was on the way to work, the South Walton Fire District said Monday in a Facebook post.
The firefighter was driving on Highway 20 when his vehicle was rear-ended. As he went to exchange information with the other driver and offer aid, a third vehicle reportedly hit both cars and the firefighter, WMBB reported.
The first responder has undergone surgery, according to fire district officials.
The driver from the first crash fled into a wooded area, according to Florida Highway Patrol, and is now a hit-and-run suspect.
The incident is under investigation.
