SCALES MOUND, Ill. — An Illinois fire captain died Thursday from a heart attack shortly after responding to a medical call.
Scales Mount Fire Protection District Capt. Leo W. Werner, 67, responded to the call at about 10 p.m. Wednesday night and "suffered an apparent heart attack" shortly after returning home from the call, according to fire officials. Despite resuscitation efforts by members of the Scales Mount Fire Protection District and EMS responders, Werner died at the hospital just after 12 a.m. Thursday.
Werner was a 46-year veteran of his department and a U.S. Army veteran. He is survived by his wife, two sons, who are also firefighters, one daughter and four grandchildren.
"Captain Werner will be dearly missed by family, fire department family and anyone who knew him," the Scales Mount Fire Protection District said in a statement.
