WORCESTER, Mass. — A firefighter lieutenant was killed and three other firefighters were injured in a four-alarm fire early Wednesday morning.

Worcester Fire Department Firefighter Lt. Jason Menard died while fighting the blaze at a three-story building, MassLive reported.

A call was made from the third floor to report a firefighter who was lost and disoriented, scanner audio shows, but it is not clear if that firefighter was Menard.

Worcester Fire Chief Michael Lavoie said a baby was trapped on the third floor and Menard and the other firefighters made heroic efforts during the response. The condition of the baby has not been reported.

Of the three firefighters injured, one is reportedly in critical condition.

Lavoie said Menard was a passionate firefighter and called his actions and the actions of other firefighters at the scene courageous.

Menard is survived by his wife and three young children.

Menard is the second Worcester firefighter to pass away this year. In July, Fire Lt. John Kennedy died from injuries a few days after fighting a fire.

It is with a very heavy heart that Chief Michael Lavoie, City Manager Edward M. Augustus, Jr. and Mayor Petty announce...
