WESTWOOD, N.J. — Firefighter Kevin May, 29, died Monday, one week after responding to a house fire, the Westwood Volunteer Fire Department announced Tuesday.

May worked at a five-alarm fire at an Upper Saddle River home on Oct. 16.

He woke up the next morning to discover that he had chest pains and trouble breathing, NorthJersey.com reported. May got a stent at a hospital and by Monday had been recovering at home when he was found unresponsive there.

"Kevin has left a hole that will be extremely hard to fill," a department spokesperson said.

He served in the fire department for 11 years and portrayed Santa Claus for the department.
