NY firefighter injured during training exercise dies

SAYRE, Pa. — A New York firefighter who was injured during a training exercise at the state academy last week has died. 

Watertown Firefighter Peyton Morse, 21, had been in the ICU at a Pennsylvania hospital since March 3, when he suffered a medical emergency while working with a breathing apparatus during a training drill, according to WWNY. The drill was part of an 11-week program at the New York State Academy of Fire Science Training in Montour Falls, which Morse was attending with 39 other recruits from across the state. 

Morse, who was also a member of the LaFargeville and Shaker Road-Loudonville Fire Departments, died on Friday, March 12, Watertown Fire Chief Matthew Timerman announced. 

"Firefighter Morse remained in the ICU fighting for his life with his wife and family beside him. The families, Watertown, Shaker Road-Loudonville, and LaFargeville Fire Departments wish to thank everyone for the prayers and numerous displays of support," Timerman wrote. "Peyton's entire life was dedicated to helping people and he would want all of us to continue his mission in life."
