ST. JOHN, Virgin Islands — One firefighter was killed and another was injured Monday in a single-vehicle crash on St. John, the St. Thomas Source reported.
“While returning to their duty station after training, two firefighters were involved in a motor vehicle accident on St. John that tragically took the life of one of the firefighters and injured the other,” according to a news release from the Virgin Islands Fire Service.
The U.S. Fire Administration announced Tuesday that Kacey Callwood, 31, died in the line of duty. He had served for two years.
The injured firefighter was checked by medical personnel and has been released, Assistant Fire Service Director Antonio Stevens said.
Based on descriptions from island residents, construction crew members and visitors who were in the area, the fire truck flipped over after rolling downhill. A tow truck was later seen hauling the damaged vehicle.
An investigation is ongoing.
