LAS VEGAS — An Arizona firefighter who was hit by a bullet during the mass shooting in Las Vegas is on the road to recovery.

12news.com reported that Kurt Fowler, who works for Lake Havasu City, was celebrating nearly two decades of marriage at the Route 91 Harvest festival when gunfire erupted. Fowler shielded his wife, Trina, when a bullet hit him above his right ankle. He told her to leave and run.

"I remember running, thinking he was dead," Fowler's wife said. "I saw my three babies' faces and I ran for them."

Strangers helped get Fowler to safety; doctors said it will be at least a year before he can return to work as a firefighter.

"I will make my way back to the engine," Fowler said.

A GoFundMe page was started to help with Fowler's medical bills.
