Father, stepson killed in blaze
Firefighters fast response credited with preventing more fatalities
FLANDERS, N.J — A father and stepson were killed in a fast-moving fire Monday.
Investigators are looking at a space heater as the possible cause, according to PIX11.
The blaze killed the 52-year-old father and his 7-year-old stepson after being trapped in their first-floor apartment.
Volunteer firefighters used thermal imaging to find the pair and pulled Hashen Moustafa and his stepson out, but were unable to save them.
Four families occupy the apartments and the other three were able to escape unharmed. A 9-year-old girl suffered burns and was flown to a nearby hospital and was listed in critical but stable condition.
Flanders Fire Chief Frank Zeller said that the fierce winds fanned the flames and the below-freezing temperatures presented several challenges to crews.
Despite the deaths, officials said had it not been for the firefighters' quick response, more may have perished. The firehouse is only 100 yards from the apartment.
The Red Cross is providing temporary shelter for the families.
