Fire Marshal David Creasy said the man was clinging to a pillar on a bridge when rescuers reached him

RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond Fire Department crews pulled a man from the James River on Sunday evening after three people on Belle Isle saw him being swept away.

Fire Marshal David Creasy said the man was clinging to a pillar on the Lee Bridge when rescuers reached him. Creasy said it was unclear how the man, who appeared to be in his 30s, got in the water. He was suffering from mild hypothermia and was taken to VCU Medical Center.

The people on Belle Isle called 911 about 8:15 p.m. and then kept track of the man, Creasy said.

“If they hadn’t seen him coming down the river, I don’t think he would have made it,” he said.
