WAUKESHA, Wis. —The family and friends of Caledonia Firefighter Don Tiegs have received two kinds of good news recently.

Tiegs’ son Erick was seriously injured in November when an SUV drove into a crowd during Waukesha’s annual holiday parade. The Waukesha South High School sophomore was playing trombone in the school band. Six people died, and dozens were injured.

When Erick was able to go leave the hospital days later, a Caledonia Fire Department truck escorted him home, WISN reported.

According to the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin Charitable Foundation, a fundraiser set up to help the family cope with Erick’s medical bills has raised $80,000. The group gave the Tiegs family a check on Jan. 18.

And that was the first day Erick was able to walk without crutches since the incident.

As his recovery is not yet complete, and the medical bills keep coming, the fundraiser is ongoing.
