PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. — A Maryland volunteer fire chief with more than 50 years of combined career and volunteer firefighting experience died due to COVID-19 complications on Tuesday.

Allentown Road Volunteer Fire Department Chief Nick Finamore was a well-known fire service leader in the Prince George’s County area, and was the volunteer operations commander and a retired deputy chief at Prince George’s County Fire and EMS.

“Chief Finamore was considered a pioneer in the Prince George’s County Fire Department, a true leader and the epitome of the perfect Fire Fighter,” read a statement from the Prince George’s County Professional Fire Fighters & Paramedics Association. “There was never a shortage of stories about Chief Finamore and his love for the job. This is a loss that many will mourn while they reflect on the mark that he left on the Prince George’s County Fire Department.”

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department assisted Prince George’s County agencies in escorting Finamore and his family from the hospital after his death on Monday morning.

Several local first responders expressed their condolences on social media.

“The legendary Chief Finamore dedicated his entire adult life to the Prince George’s County, MD fire service,” the Kentland Volunteer Fire Department posted on Facebook. "... He was instrumental in teaching generations of young Officers and Firefighters alike.”

“Rest Easy Chief, thank you for all that you have done for the members at Co 47,” read a Facebook post by the Professional Fire Fighters of Station 47 in Fort Washington. “You’ll be greatly missed at the kitchen table with the stories and lessons you told.”
