KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Firefighters rescued five people from a burning apartment building that was supposed to be vacant in Kansas City’s Northeast area Wednesday night, a fire department spokesman said.
None of those rescued were believed to have been paying rent at the apartment building and they quickly left the scene after being examined for injuries, said Fire Inspector Jason Spreitzer, a spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department.
Firefighters responded shortly before 7:40 p.m. Wednesday to the fire at the three-story apartment building near the southeast corner of North Lawn and Scarritt avenues. Arriving fire crews reported the fire appeared to be on the third floor of the building.
Photos posted to Facebook by KCFD Station 23 “The Avenue” showed heavy flames and smoke shooting out of the windows.

Firefighters attacked the fire and were able to extinguish the blaze within 10 minutes after arriving. At the same time, other firefighters pulled five people out of the building to safety, Spreitzer said.
No one was injured in the fire.
