JERSEY CITY, N.J. — A former New Jersey fire chief will receive more than $400,000 for unused time accumulated over years of employment, according to a report by the Advance/SILive.com‘s sister site NJ.com.

Steven McGill, a fire chief of Jersey City Fire Department since 2018, retired in February after more than 30 years with the department. McGill will receive a total payout, which is commonly known as “boat checks,” of unused sick, vacation, and compensation time totaling $420,964.17, according to documents received through an Open Public Records Act request made by NJ.com.

They are called “boat checks” because the retiree could buy a boat with the extra cash, according to the media outlet. The compensation will be paid over the course of three years, with each payment just over $140,000.

NJ.com reports that large payouts for longtime public workers continue in New Jersey. A law enacted in 2010 capped local government employees from collecting more than $15,000 in payment for unused sick time, but it only applies to employees hired after 2010.

According to the media outlet, McGill cashed out 68 unpaid sick days, 60 unpaid vacation days, 26 terminal leave days, 24 deferred vacation days and 93 comp time days.
