Man, 81, shot by police after opening fire on FFs, EMS responding to call

Clermont Fire Department and EMS responded to a medical call at the home made by the man’s wife and were shot at upon arrival

CLERMONT, Fla. — An 81-year-old man was shot after shooting at firefighters and EMS who were called to his Clermont residence and then exchanged gunfire with police officers Friday evening, according to the Clermont Police Department.

Clermont Fire Department and EMS responded to a medical call at a W. Hwy. 50 home placed by the 81-year-old’s wife, the department said. Upon their arrival, around 8:15 p.m., the man began firing at the responders, forcing them to seek shelter and call police, Clermont Police Department said.

No responders were hurt. Once the Clermont Police arrived on scene gunfire was exchanged and an officer shot the 81-year-old, the department said.

The Clermont police officer is now under administrative leave with pay pending an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, according to the department.

The alleged gunman was transported to local medical center and is in stable condition, the department said.

Officers and the 81-year-old’s wife were not injured, according to the department.
