SAN FRANCISCO — A driver plowed into a Trader Joe’s in the San Francisco Bay Area on Thursday afternoon, injuring several people, officials said.

An elderly driver injured at least five people when he accidentally accelerated into the market in Castro Valley on Redwood Road, Lt. Ray Kelly, a public information officer with the Alameda Sheriff’s Department, told SFGATE.

“There was no malice or bad intent,” Kelly wrote in an email.

The California Highway Patrol’s incident page said that when first responders arrived, at least three people were down.

The Alameda County Fire Department posted on Twitter at 4:33 p.m. that firefighters were at the scene of the market and assessing the store for hazards and treating injured people.

A photo shared by the department showed a gray Toyota Avalon parked inside the store adjacent to a smashed checkout area.

The California Highway Patrol KTVU that the driver was an 88-year-old Hayward resident.
