Detroit — Christmas morning was the scene of a grisly find in a garage fire on the city’s east side — the second discovery of two bodies in a trunk of a vehicle within a week.

Firefighters called to the scene of the fire found the charred remains of two people inside the trunk, the bodies so badly burned that authorities could not determine their identities.

The gruesome discovery was made just after 1 a.m. on the 14000 block of Lannette Street, said Detroit Police Sgt. Alan Quinn. The fire enveloped the garage and a vehicle parked inside to the point that firefighters could not tell the make or model of the vehicle.

Sunday’s find was similar to and within walking distance of deaths discovered Dec. 19 by a teen who found the corpses of two women in the trunk of a silver Chrysler 300 on the 14400 block of Promenade Avenue.

Police would not say Sunday whether they are investigating whether the deaths were related. Detectives are expected to determine whether this latest incident was a homicide, Quinn said.

Quinn did not know whether the two women found last week, identified as Renisha Landers and Demesha Hunt, were victims of homicide. Cause of death is pending toxicology reports.
