Charlotte, N.C. — One firefighter was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and another fell through a roof while battling a blaze Wednesday afternoon on Back Creek Church Road in northeast Charlotte.

A volunteer from the Newell Volunteer Fire Department was approaching the fire on foot when he fell over, hitting his head. It was unclear whether he tripped over a line of nearby hose or suffered a medical emergency that caused him to fall. The man didn’t have his firefighting gear on when he fell, said Battallion Chief Mike Wilson.

Firefighters saw him on the ground and started doing CPR when they discovered that he was in cardiac arrest and were ultimately able to resuscitate him.
