2 firefighters killed in Hong Kong building fire

HONG KONG — A fire that broke out Sunday in a Hong Kong apartment building killed two firefighters and an elderly woman, authorities said.

At least 55 other people were treated for injuries, with one in critical condition, government authorities said in a statement. A 77-year-old woman and two firefighters aged 25 and 46 were killed.

The fire started Sunday morning in the busy Mong Kok section of Hong Kong, the statement said. It took firefighters about six hours to extinguish the blaze.

Residents were evacuated from the building and nearby roads were closed.

Details about how the deaths occurred were not immediately available. The fire’s cause was under investigation.
