COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado — An apartment fire that killed two people and displaced dozens was apparently set to target specific people, authorities said as they arrested another person in the case.
Derrick Nicholas Johnson, 23, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of first-degree murder. He was arrested earlier in a domestic dispute with a woman who lived at the complex, officials said. She and her child survived the fire.
Johnson’s cousin, Gene Johnson, 36, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of first-degree murder. Additional arrests were not expected.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but authorities have said they believe it was arson.
It was not clear Thursday whether Gene or Derrick Johnson had an attorney.
The bodies of the two known victims were still in the structure Thursday. Fire Marshal Brett Lacey said they had not been identified.
The fire broke out early Tuesday in the three-story, 135-unit complex, forcing some pajama-clad residents to leap from balconies. Firefighters plucked 62 people from windows.
