LAKE GROVE, N.Y. — Seven people were injured, two critically, when a gas leak caused an explosion and fire, police said Wednesday.
The explosion happened at about 11 p.m. Tuesday in the basement apartment of a ranch-style house, Suffolk County Police Sgt. George White said.
The victims — a person who rented the apartment and six friends — were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital.
Two were in critical condition and the others were in serious condition, White said.
Investigators determined there was a compromised flexible gas line feeding a natural gas stove in the basement that leaked gas into the apartment and that a spark or other ignition source set off the blast.
