NEW YORK — Accused fake firefighter Peter Braunstein is due for another court appearance today. The judge is holding a hearing on Braunstein’s mental state.
The writer, 41, accused of setting fires and posing as a firefighter so he could get into a woman’s apartment, pleaded not guilty on January 5 to charges that he bound and sadistically abused the woman for more than 13 hours.
Braunstein’s lawyer, Robert Gottlieb, told state Supreme Court Justice Brenda Soloff in January he would likely request a mental competency exam when his client returns to court today. That exam would determine whether Braunstein is fit to stand trial.
