PELICAN RAPIDS, Minn. — A barn fire near Pelican Rapids has killed about 9,000 turkeys that were due to go to market next week.

John Gorton operates the farm and made the emergency call Tuesday night. Firefighters from Pelican Rapids and Elizabeth arrived to find the barn engulfed in flames.

Firefighters worked to contain the blaze, but the building — and its turkeys — were a total loss.

The Daily Journal of Fergus Falls reported that losses were estimated at up to $750,000. Firefighters were on the scene for about four hours.

Arson was not believed to be a factor. Pelican Rapids Fire Chief Trevor Steeves said an electrical problem might be to blame.

The Otter Tail County sheriff’s office was investigating.
