It’s not quite a Dalmatian, but the Arcata Fire Protection District did welcome its new dog to the station Friday.
“Casper” is a dog training mannequin designed to help firefighters learn how to revive animals found at fire scenes.
“Firefighters have always had to rely on improvised methods to revive dogs and cats suffering from smoke inhalation after being rescued from smoke and fire situations,” stated an Arcata Fire Protection District press release.
Dr. Jay Hight and the Sunny Brae Animal Clinic has donated animal rescue equipment and training with Casper to the district.
Casper was provided to the district by the Arcata Volunteers’ CPR training center.
“Now firefighters have a far greater opportunity for a successful conclusion for the unconscious pet rescued from a fire,” the release stated.
Casper is manufactured by the same company that makes the human CPR training mannequins.
