COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A fire at an apartment complex forced dozens of residents into freezing temperatures and several people were injured in their escape early Tuesday, authorities said.
Fire Lt. Jeff Sievers said authorities were still trying several hours to determine how many people had escaped the 130-unit building, and whether anyone remained inside.
“To be honest we have no idea, right now,” Sievers told The Gazette of Colorado Springs.
Sievers said one firefighter was slightly injured in the blaze, first reported about 12:45 a.m., and 13 other people were taken to hospitals with smoke inhalation, sprained ankles and hypothermia.
The Red Cross had established an emergency shelter at a nearby church.
The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
