State police say traffic along Interstate 65 in northwestern Indiana had slowed Friday morning and the semitrailer could not stop in time. That semitrailer slammed the pickup truck into another semitrailer.

Those killed were 33-year-old Brian W. Workman and 31-year-old Joanna L. Workman, along with 13-year-old Ashley, 8-year-old Tyler and 1-year-old Ryan Workman. They were from Hobart. The semitrailers’ drivers were not injured.

Police closed the highway for more than six hours to clean up the scorched debris.
