Fallen Mass. firefighter’s family backs department’s decisions

Firefighter John Davies, a 17-year veteran of the department, was rushed to the hospital but later pronounced dead

BOSTON — Despite the fatal consequences for Worcester firefighter Jon Davies in last week’s fire and building collapse, his family told reporters yesterday they support his department’s decision to send him and his partner into the burning apartment building for a tenant who turned out not to be home.

‘There’s no doubt in our mind that they made the best decisions possible with the information available on that fateful morning,’ said Davies’ younger brother, Robert.

Robert Davies said his brother’s heroism needs no flowery praise.

‘I think his actions speak for themselves,’ he said. ‘I think Benjamin Franklin said it best, ‘Well done is better than well said.’ Without hesitation he went into that building.’

Davies’ family spoke proudly of him but asked for privacy in their grief.

‘We’re doing well. We’re taking the situation for what it is. It sucks,’ Jon Davies Jr., told reporters. ‘But I know my dad wouldn’t want us walking around and moping about it.’
