FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. — A fire at Fort Campbell last month that killed a soldier’s two young children was arson, law enforcement officials said Friday.
Details about what was used to start the fire were not being released, said Craig Roegner, a spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
“There was enough information to say yes, in fact it is arson, but we don’t have enough to give a cause yet,” he said. The investigation was continuing.
Six families lived in the same two-story housing unit where the fire broke out, a housing development called Lee Village that dates to the 1940s.
In a joint release with Army Criminal Investigation Command, the ATF identified the dead children as Rebekah Smallwood, 2, and Samuel Fagan, 9.
Spc. Wayne Smallwood, 33, of the 626th Corps Support Battalion, and his wife, Billi-Jo Lee Smallwood, 32, suffered minor injuries. Their infant daughter, Nevaeh, was not injured, the release said.
