Legislation that protects the jobs of volunteer firefighters and other first responders injured in the line of duty has passed the State House. In addition to firefighters, the bill also protects other first responders, including rescue squad members, emergency medical technicians, peace officers and members of an emergency management agency. Under terms of the bill, employers are prevented from terminating a volunteer first responder who is absent from work because of injuries incurred in the line of duty. Employers would have the authority to request approved information about an injury from the appropriate chiefs and physicians.
