Fla. firefighters to be promoted after racism investigation

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A federal judge plans to order Jacksonville to promote three white fire lieutenants. A jury ruled last month they had been discriminated against by a former fire chief because of their race.

The jury found that former Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Chief Ray Alfred, who is black, refused in 1999 to promote four firefighters from lieutenant to captain. Jurors awarded back pay of about $225,000 to the three surviving lieutenants and the widow of a fourth.

The judge says he plans to award the back pay and boost the men’s pensions retroactively back to October 1999.
