Former California firefighter charged with showing sex videos to youths

SANTA ROSA, Calif. — A former Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety officer and former Bennett Valley fireman was charged in a 19-count complaint this morning with exhibiting and recording sexual videos to eight underage boys in the fire department’s Explorers’ program.

The charges were filed against 31-year-old Matthew David Phillips in Sonoma County Superior Court. Phillips was remanded to the county jail under $250,000 bail and is scheduled to enter pleas and have his bail reviewed Friday.

Deputy District Attorney William Brockley said the oldest alleged victim was 13 years old in 1994 when one of the offenses occurred. The other alleged victims were ages 16 and 17 when the bulk of the offenses occurred in 2003 and 2004, Brockley said.
